‘Iron Lady" – so sympathetic to the Italian government the weekly “Panorama” called Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The media is discussing whether the head of government, who is the only 1 among the EU leaders with good relations with Donald Trump, will, as she promised, be able to build a bridge between the Union and the fresh US administration.
Meloni was the only leader from the European Union to curse Trump. It was then that she declared that "Italy will always be active in strengthening the dialog between the United States and Europe, which is an essential foundation for stableness and development". Meloni was besides the first always Prime Minister of Italy to participate in the swearing-in of the president of the United States.
Even before the Trump swearing in, she flew to Florida for a fewer hours to meet him at his Mar-a-Lago residence, which was considered evidence of their good relationship. Then he said:
I'm here with a fantastic woman, Prime Minister of Italy. She truly stormed Europe.
The head of government besides has a very good relation with close co-worker president Elon Musk, who had previously attended the festival of her organization – the Italian Brothers in Rome. In early January, at a press conference Musk defended against allegations of interfering with another countries' politics. This is how she reacted to his harsh criticism of the UK Prime Minister Keira Starmer and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. She besides defended Trump, expressing her opinion that he would not abandon Ukraine and that he was acting “reasonably”.
A fewer days after the ceremony in Washington, D.C., the Milan weekly “Panorama” published an article “The Government of Giorgia” in which he noted “successes and peculiar global relations” of the first female as Prime Minister of Italy.
He stressed that Meloni "danced alone" and that among her achievements he listed a strong position in the EU, including in relations with Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, making friends with Elon Musk and the Trump support that praises her. He noted that the global press writes about Meloni as a "new strong female of Europe" ("Le Figaro"), "a pragmatic and capable female who has amazed many people in Europe in 2 years" ("Guardian").
A fewer months earlier, however, a number of comments expressed the opinion that Meloni had been "isolated" and "excluded" from discussions by respective European leaders on the distribution of key positions in the EU following the elections to the European Parliament.
Meloni's central right-wing government, established in October 2022, is ranked seventh among 68 cabinets in the past of the Republic in terms of dimension of work.
Despite many frictions in the coalition formed by her home organization The Italian Brothers of Forza Italia and the Right-wing League, her government stands out, as the commentators admit, with stability, especially compared to the political crises in France and Germany.
Meloni herself is characterized by a very early beginning of political career and an iron character.
Giorgia Meloni was born in 1977 in Rome. Her parent Anna Paratore, erstwhile she was alone with her and her sister, maintained her romance writing. She released them under a pseudonym over 100.
At the age of 29, Meloni was elected to the home of Deputies from the list of the right-wing National Alliance and was vice-president of the lower home of Parliament from 2006 to 2008. In 2008, at the age of 31, she became Minister for Youth Affairs in Silvio Berlusconi's 4th government. She was the youngest minister in the past of the Republic.
She left the centre-right block under Berlusconi and established a fresh party. Since 2014, it has been called the Italian Brothers (Fratelli d’Italia), referring to the first words of the Italian anthem. The group headed by her is considered heir to the National Alliance, formed by the transformation of the neofascist Italian Social Movement (MSI), founded in 1946.
In this context, it is recalled that Meloni joined the young MSI at the age of 15.
There was besides a recording when, as a 19-year-old in a speech for French television, she called Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini "a good politician".
When she was told years ago, she said:
Enough with the communicative of fascism and antifascism. We were born before the 1980s. We will defend the values on which the constitution is based and which are close to those who fought Fascism.
Since 2014, her organization has been constantly opposed to subsequent governments. Nor did she enter Mario Draghi's last cabinet, which in 2021, at the summit of the Covid-19 pandemic, headed the government of national consent.
Family defence and Values
In opposition, Meloni took part in initiatives to defend the household and Christian values, against giving rights to homosexual couples. She criticized LGBT demands. A fewer years ago, she caused controversy by searching for a homosexual relation in an animated children's movie "Iceland II".
In 2019, during a rally in Rome, she said the words frequently recalled:
I am Giorgia, I am a woman, I am a mother, I am Italian, I am Christian. You can't take that distant from me.
From 2020 to January this year, Meloni was president of the European Conservative and Reformist Party. In the European Parliament, its grouping is in a single faction with the Law and Justice. Her successor as the leader of the organization was appointed by her erstwhile Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, with whom she maintained a good relation erstwhile he headed the government. She besides had good relations with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban before openly starting to argue EU policy on the war of Russia against Ukraine.
On her initiative, Parliament passed a law a fewer years ago on the work to install devices in cars preventing children from leaving their seats. It entered into force after a series of tragic events erstwhile respective children forgotten by guardians died in closed heated cars.
In the Italian planet of politics, she is harshly criticized by the centre-left opposition for wanting to strengthen the position of head of government and a bill that would introduce direct Prime Minister elections. The alleged premierato calls "the parent of all reforms", arguing that only a unchangeable government with a strong mandate can warrant the country's development. According to the opposition, this would mean weakening the powers of the President, who, according to the Constitution, entrusts the candidate with the mission of forming a government.
In addition, her opponents accuse her of subjugating to RAI television, which her most avid critics call "TeleMelons".
A Stand Against Russia
On the European forum, the Prime Minister is praised for his unconcerned attitude on the war between Russia and Ukraine and repeated statements of support for this country. Her government has passed further decrees to send military aid to Kiev.
One of the priorities of her coalition is to fight illegal immigration and human smugglers.
It is powerfully criticized by the opposition for concluding an agreement with the Albanian Government to set up 2 centres in that country for migrants rescued at sea during an effort to cross to Italy. The court in Rome 3 times ordered the return of migrants who were placed in Albanian centres to Italy.
She did not comment on Donald Trump's decision on the mass deportation of illegal immigrants from the US.
In late January, Meloni personally announced that she and respective ministers of her government had been included in a prosecutorial investigation into the release of the Libyan Osama Andjei arrested in Italy, wanted in connection with the charge of war crimes and crimes against humanity by the global Criminal Court in The Hague. It was sent to Libya.
Despite regular attacks and attempts to destabilise the government, Italy's support is strong
said Prime Minister Meloni on Friday. So she commented on the consequence of the latest poll, according to which her organization has over 30% of support.
I go forward, as always with my head high
“ She added.
