Who fights by sword... or semiconductors

There are many indications that the United States coalition, which aims to block China's ability to get abroad chips production machines, will not have the intended effect. It will surely not affect the condition of Chinese manufacturers of this kind of equipment and any materials utilized in the manufacture of integrated circuits.

In 2022, about 35% of Chinese semiconductor factories utilized home equipment, and even a year earlier there were 21% of them.

Only in the first 4th of this year, local companies won nearly half of all public tenders for the supply of chip production machines announced by leading microprocessor manufacturers.

Semiconductor Manufacturing global corp (中芯国际集成电路制造有限公司SMIC), 1 of the largest Chinese manufacturers of semiconductor components announced their intention to invest RMB 500 billion (about PLN 301 billion) in a fresh integrated circuit factory. It will be a joint venture (JV) formed from:

  • National Integrated Circuit Fund (国家集成电路刹那也投资基金) and
  • BeiJing YiZhuang global Investment improvement Co., Ltd. (北京亦庄国际投资发展有限公司).

Purpose of the company: in 2024 start production of chips up to 12 nm, and in subsequent years 7 nm and “higher”.

According to Chinese chip marketplace observers, this investment and the expansion of the existing mill in Shanghai form part of a larger effort to make its own 5 nm and 3 nm integrated circuits. Not today, not tomorrow, not for a while. Based solely on Chinese machinery, equipment and materials (of course in this respect where possible)

SMIC has been utilizing home machines to produce 14 nm chips since 2019.

Global restrictions on the availability of Chinese forms to abroad technologies powerfully accelerated the efforts of Chinese companies to accomplish self-sufficiency in semiconductor production.

Opinions on China

John Neuffer, president and CEO of the American Semiconductor manufacture Association:

“China is the largest marketplace for American semiconductors. The U.S. government has concerns about what is called national security, but American semiconductor companies cannot quit their presence on the Chinese market. China is the largest semiconductor marketplace in the world, in the interest of either organization is not to search to separate from China (decoupling), break supply chains and disrupt these supplies."

The last on Micron's list is experiencing what Chinese companies in the US are dealing with. The authorities concluded that Micron products endanger China's national safety and decided to remove them from all facilities operating in China
