Iraq. 20 years after Saddam Hussein fell

‘My fellow citizens. At this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the planet from grave danger.

By 20 years ago, on 19 March 2003, president Bush made these words, the first American aircraft had already bombed targets in Iraq. A fewer hours later, the global coalition's land forces entered the action. This was how the Second Gulf War began, which was to have disastrous consequences not only for Iraq itself, but for the full mediate East.

The invasion not only destroyed Saddam Hussein's regime, but, above all, destroyed Iraqi statehood. The full collapse of public institutions and the resulting chaos led to a bloody civilian war and Iraq's infiltration by the neighboring muslim Republic of Iran. Chaos in Mesopotamia were besides rapidly utilized by terrorists who, respective years after Saddam's overthrow, erected the “black flags” of the muslim State over the areas of Syria and Iraq.
