The National Memorial Institute launched an investigation into Jarosław Hunki, an SS-man surviving in Canada. Ukrainian served in the 14th Division of Grenadiers Waffen SS. In the Canadian parliament, he was named "the hero of Canada and Ukraine".
IPN launched an investigation into Jarosław Hunka, a soldier of the 14th Waffen SS Grenadier Division. The Institute's prosecutors analyse the papers held by the Ukrainians who lived in Canada. Ukrainians from the SS Galizien participated in February 1944 in a crime in the Pieniacka Huta, where they murdered the civilian population. Soldiers of the formation in which Hunk served are besides suspected of committing crimes in Iwonicz, Chodaczków Wielki, Prehoryl and Smoligów. The IPN spokesperson Dr. Rafał Leśkiewicz stated that the intent of analysing respective twelve volumes of files is to check whether the name of Hunki appears in them. He stressed that these actions were taken immediately after obtaining information about Jarosław Hunce and welcoming him with ovations by the Parliament of Canada and the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski.

Crime in Pieniacka Huta

The SS Division “Galizen” was established in April 1943 in Lviv, in east Galicia. The inspiration for the formation of the division was the territory governor, grouppenfuehrer SS Otto Wachter. This task was patronized by politicians from the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists from the faction of Colonel Andrei Melnyk. The initiative to make a division was supported by the Ukrainian Central Committee. In the first 2 months of the formation of the 14th SS Volunteer Division “Galizen” reported about 80,000 volunteers. Of these, respective 1000 were trained. His chaplains were directed to the division by Archbishop Andrzej Szeptycki, head of the Greek Catholic Church in Galicia and spiritual leader of the Ukrainians there. On 28 February 1944, composed of volunteers to the SS division “Galizen” 4th SS police regiment committed crimes in Poles - residents of the Pieniacka Huta, killing 850-900 people. The direct origin of the pacification of this village was the killing of 2 soldiers of the 4th regiment by Poles. They were buried as the first 2 killed SS soldiers “Galizien”, even though the regiment did not formally belong to this division.
