Only U.S. president Donald Trump is able to solve the “freezing conflict” between Moldova and the separatist Transnistria," wrote the American magazine “The National Interest”.
The author of the article, Daniel F. Runde, estimated that after the Moldovan parliamentary elections that brought pro-European president Mai Sandu a unchangeable majority, it was time to take real action for peace in the region.
– The resolution of the conflict would bring economical benefits to the US, Moldova, Ukraine and Europe as a whole. Only Trump, combining peace negotiations with business prospects, has a chance to accomplish this – wrote Rounde.
The expert pointed out that a possible peace agreement could open fresh trade routes between Ukraine and Europe and strengthen economical cooperation in the region, in peculiar in the context of the US-Ukraine agreement on natural materials extraction and reconstruction of the Ukrainian economy.
According to the author, the coming years could become a "turnover point" for the region. At the same time, he mentioned the closed border with Ukraine, the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, and the continuation of the pro-European Sandu party.
The circular believes that 2026 will be the minute erstwhile the West should enter into a direct dialog with the political and economical elites of Transnistria. He besides suggested that Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean should ask Trump for mediation and consider a model of autonomy for Transnistria akin to the position of Gagauzia.
