IndiGo Landing at Navi Mumbai

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) completed Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) validation earlier this month, marking a critical safety milestone. The PAPI system utilizes specialized lighting arrays to guide pilots during landing approaches.

Adani Airports-led NMIA officials confirm this test landing advances the airport toward its March 31, 2025, operational launch date. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis received an invitation to observe the historic landing operation, however, his presence is yet to be confirmed.

As reported by Aviation A2Z, in November 2024, IndiGo successfully carried out simulator validation for Draft RNP approaches at Navi Mumbai and Noida Airport.

IndiGo has already made its first test flight at Noida International Airport and will also be the first to do it at NMIAL.

The AAI’s Flight Inspection Unit validated the PAPI system on December 12, conducting comprehensive day and night testing protocols. The system employs red and white signal lights positioned perpendicular to the runway, ensuring precise glide path adherence.

What are PAPI lights?

Precision Approach Path Indicator systems enable accurate aircraft landing trajectories through strategically positioned light arrays. The technology provides immediate visual feedback for pilots managing descent angles during critical approach phases.

The system deploys four distinct light units positioned alongside runway landing thresholds. Each unit emits precisely calibrated red and white signals to indicate aircraft positioning relative to optimal glide paths.

Pilots interpret these color-coded signals to maintain accurate descent trajectories. Equal distribution of red and white lights confirms correct approach angles, while uneven ratios signal necessary course corrections.

PAPI installations operate independently of ground-based navigation systems, providing reliable visual guidance in varying weather conditions. The system maintains consistent performance during both daytime and nighttime operations.

Noida First Test Landing

Noida International Airport commenced essential operational trials on December 9, 2024, marking advancement toward commercial service launch. An Airports Authority of India aircraft executed comprehensive landing procedures at 11:00 AM.

The test flight conducted extended aerial maneuvers spanning two hours across the airport’s operational airspace. AAI flight crews gathered crucial performance data throughout multiple approach and landing sequences.

The collected operational metrics undergo analysis for submission to India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation. DGCA officials require this data to evaluate the airport’s readiness for commercial operations.
