After reaching 65, many seniors are unaware that they have the chance to recalculate their pension. This is very crucial information, especially for those who continued their work, belonged to OFE (Open Pension Fund) or retired early. It is worth knowing who can apply for a higher pension and how to apply to the Social Insurance Institution.
Right to recalculate a pension
The right to recalculate a pension after the age of 65 is granted to persons who have previously received a pension calculated on the basis of erstwhile provisions. This applies in peculiar to persons who:
* belonged to OFE and retired before 1 October 2017
* continued to work after retiring
* Retired early
It is worth remembering that ZUS does not automatically recalculate the pension. It is essential to submit an appropriate proposal. If the pensioner does not submit an application, the Social safety Office will only recalculate the pension ex officio after reaching an increased retirement age which may in any cases exceed 65 years.
Recalculation request
The application for recalculation of a pension can be made in respective ways:
* personally at the ZUS facility
* via mail
* electronically via PUE ZUS (Portal of Electronic Services of the Social Insurance Institution)
In order for the application to be considered, all the required papers confirming the contribution and non-contributory periods, as well as any additional certificates concerning, for example, the continuation of work after retirement, should be attached. The application form for recalculation of the pension (ZUS-ER-WPS) can be downloaded from the ZUS website or received at the ZUS facility.
Fulfilment of the application

In case of doubt, you can besides usage the assistance of pension advisers available at the Social Insurance Institution or contact the Social Insurance Institution. After submitting the application, ZUS is obliged to respond within 60 days. However, this time may extend in the case of missing papers or a large number of cases to be dealt with.

It is worth regularly checking the position of the application on the PUE ZUS or contact the ZUS hotline if the decision has not been issued within the prescribed time limit. Recalculation of a pension after 65 may lead to an increase in pension, but the exact amount depends on individual circumstances. In any cases pensioners can gain even a fewer 100 PLN per month.
