The global Maritime Organisation (IMO) reported that about 3.2 1000 merchant ships carrying around 20,000 sailors are presently trapped in the Persian Gulf and cannot get into the Indian Ocean by the Ormuz Strait, blocked by Iran.
This data was disclosed in a paper published before the IMO emergency session, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, 18-19 March, in London. During this meeting, 40 associate States of this UN agency will discuss the rapidly deteriorating situation of shipping safety in the arabian Sea, the Strait of Ormuz and the Gulf region.
Meanwhile, Iran present set 4 conditions for the beginning of the Ormuz Strait: the abolition of all sanctions imposed on the country, the closure of US military bases in the Gulf region, the unlocking of frozen Iranian assets and the improvement of non-dollar currency trade, with the preferred Chinese yuan.
If these conditions are met, Iran will resume shipping through the Ormuz Strait," reported Iranian press agency Tasnim today.
Also today, the White House's economical advisor, Kevin Hassett, argued in a conversation with CNBC that any tankers were already flowing through this strategically crucial strait, and Iran's actions, which were to block the movement on this trail, in no way harmed the US economy.
