The Youth Home Directorate and the Youth Office in the Immigrant Neukölln territory of Berlin have been hiding the rape of a 16-year-old girl for months without reporting it to the police to “not stigmatize” the perpetrators and avoid the stereotype of “typical Muslims”. In Neukölln, this logic reached a critical point: alternatively of responding, the institutions preferred not to “escalate” the problem.
This is not an isolated case in a structural sense. Anti-racism cultivated by the left, if to be credible, cannot mean the selective application of law and the protection of immigrant criminals. However, in this case there is simply a suspicion that this is what happened – that the cultural affiliation of the perpetrators affected the decision not to study the crime.
The left, which frequently declares a peculiar concern for women's rights, is in a situation of deep contradiction. erstwhile there is simply a deliberate failure to act in the name of protecting the image of the refugees, this means actually abandoning and secondary victimizing the victim. Feministic rhetoric loses any credibility – it becomes selective and subject to ideological goals.
The Neukölln case should become a border moment. If it is confirmed that the omissions resulted from ideological calculations, not only from individual consequences, but besides from a profound revision of the way social institutions function.
