3rd Republic of Poland – ‘service of Ukraine’ – repays Ukrainian credit to the EU

As we know, Poland paid in 2024 over PLN 102 million interest on the debt granted to Ukraine by the European Commission. Ukraine – not Poland. It is interest resulting from a debt concluded between the European Commission and Ukraine – not Poland. This curiosity fact was confirmed in a answer I received from the Ministry of Finance for my parliamentary intervention a fewer months ago. The erstwhile government undertook to pay these interest voluntarily.

However, the subject did not leave me alone due to the fact that the Ukrainian debt was drawn by Kiev for many years – its repayment could take up to 2068! So I began to wonder if there was a hazard that Poland would pay Ukrainian interest besides in subsequent years, e.g. in 2025, 2026 or 2027. Instinctively, on October 15, 2025 I sent another letter to the Ministry of Finance (in the mode of parliamentary intervention – No. 2025/IW582) to determine:

1. Did the Republic of Poland make (or plans to make) a repayment of another part of Ukraine's liabilities in 2025, i.e. interest on debt between Kiev and Brussels? And if so – in what amount?
2). Is the expected amount of interest already known, possibly in subsequent years (2026–127) under the same financial mechanism, Poland will pay voluntarily, on behalf of Ukraine, the European Commission?

I received an answer (sign letter WM2.054.3.2025), which all Pole should know. The Polish Ministry of Finance informed me that in 2025 Poland plans to pay Ukrainian interest in the full amount of over 110 million PLN, and in subsequent years 2026-2027 Poland... will besides pay ‘similar yearly amounts’. So, in a situation where our budget deficit and public debt have risen to an exorbitant amount, we Polish taxpayers will spend years spending on repayment of Ukrainian debt? Has anyone gone crazy in this country? After all, this is openly anti-Polish action!

But this isn't the end of history.

The provisions of the debt agreement between Ukraine and the European Commission make the payment of Ukrainian interest by Poland conditional on Ukraine making a request to Brussels all year. Conclusions concerning the years 2026 and 2027 are not yet there, but the Ministry of Finance already knows that interest will be paid – although no 1 in Kiev has even asked for it yet.

I leave this state of affairs to measure Poles and voters. And independent journalists, because, fortunately, a fewer of these in this country inactive remain.
