The state was separated from the state of Bahia in 1820 and position estado (state, states) obtained after proclamation of the Republic of Brazil, besides known as the 1889 coup. As a consequence of this Republican coup, the constitutional monarchy ended and Emperor Pedro II was exiled. Brazil became a presidential republic. 3 years after the assassination in Sergio, the first state constitution was proclaimed.
