Officially, the state as an administrative unit was formed in 1814. In the 20th century, the population of the province, like all of Argentina, experienced human rights violations and panic of military dictatorship (1976 – 1983). They were kidnapped, and a trace of them was missing, about 300 provincial residents, including its governor.
