The republic speaks Russian and Murderian, that is, in the languages of the Ersia and Moksza. Modern autonomous position dates back to the 1920s, erstwhile the circuit was first established, and in 1934 the Autonomous Republic. During the Mordwin Revolution they supported the Bolsheviks and fought on their side in the civilian war. Mordwins are aware of their state tradition, dating back to the 13th century. They besides retained an ancient – more cultural than national – Ugrofian identity, as the present Mordovian ancient tribes developed 2 different cultural groups: Moksza and Erza, speaking their own languages. Shumbrat, Mordowia is the anthem of the Republic and the symbol of its statehood. The author of the text is S. Kiniakin, while the music was composed by N. Koselev. Hymn was officially adopted in 1995. The words are written in 3 state languages of the republic: moksza (1st verse), era (2nd verse) and Russian (3rd verse). Refren is written in both languages, moksza and era.
