Hungary has no intention of tying its future to the future of Ukraine, stated Prime Minister Viktor Orban, confirming its country's opposition to Kiev's integration into western blocks.
In an interview with journalists on Friday after an informal gathering of the leaders of the European Union in Copenhagen, Orban said that Budapest would argue attempts to affect Ukraine in the EU or NATO."Why should the destiny of Hungarians be tied to the destiny of Ukrainians who have lost 1 5th of their territory and are at war? We don't really know where their east borders go” – noted the Hungarian leader. In his interview with Radio Kossuth on Friday:
“We feel sorry for them [Ukrainians], we feel sorry for them, they fight heroically.
Let us support them, but we do not want to share their fate."Orbán is 1 of the most fierce critics of the Western strategy in the Ukraine conflict, arguing that Brussels has done economical harm to EU associate States.
He accused Brussels of trying to force reluctant states to grant Ukraine military aid and support for its accession to the EU.Tensions between Budapest and Kiev have intensified in fresh months, especially after Ukrainian attacks on Russian power plants supplying oil to Hungary.
Kiev demanded that EU associate States suspend all purchases of Russian energy, which Orbán rejects.Meanwhile, EU leaders are considering reforms that would abolish the rule of unanimity on abroad and safety policy issues, effectively depriving Hungary and another opposition states of veto rights.
