At the turn of June and July, the Warsaw quintet HoTS will execute for the first time on a tour in China. The band will start the tour at the Make Music Festival in Hong Kong and then execute at 10 club concerts, including Chongqing, Nanjing, Hefei, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Xiamen. The way will run from 21 June to 7 July 2024 and is organized as part of the task JAZZ POLSK “About the World”.
As of 21 June, the Warsaw HoTS quintet will execute for the first time on a tour in China. The band formed more than a decade ago by guitarist and composer Nicholas Poncilius, will start the tour at the Make Music Festival in Hong Kong. He will execute there twice on June 21 at the club The Wantch and a day later at the legendary club Fringe.
"HoTS performance tour is organized as part of the latest JAZZ POLSku task – Around the World, but is besides a summary of the 10 year presence of the Foundation in the Chinese market. The quintet of Nicholas Pontylius is simply a 25th band to execute in China, starting the 3rd 100 organized concerts. We will play both in acquainted places specified as the punk club NUTS Live home in Chongqing, recognized as the largest city in the world, as well as in Real Live home clubs in coastal Xiamen and Lavo in Shenzhen, China's silicon valley. In all these clubs we organize concerts of Polish artists regularly for many years. This time, however, we will start the tour in a peculiar place – The Fringe Club in Hong Kong, the only club where artists can present their music for more than 40 years without having to undergo censorship. It is simply a unique place on the music map of China, where more than 3000 concerts have been held so far," says Jakub Krzeszowski, the founder of JAZZ POLSku Foundation.
Next, the HoTS quintet will go to mainland China where it will play, among others, at Peny Black in Shenzhen (23 June), NUTS Live home in Chongqing (26 June), 1710 Live home in Nanjing (27 June), Lincoln Center in Shanghai (28-29 June), Real Live home in Xiamen (4-5 July) and Lavo (6-7 July). The band will execute a full of 12 concerts from 21 June to 7 July.
Since the beginning of its existence, HoTS has been searching for its own voice and developing an first sound, referring to the European tradition of modern jazz. They have 3 very well-received records: Harmony of the Spheres (2015), Numbers (2016) and Live in 3 (2019). The squad re-created after a longer break of absence includes, Mikołaj Ponciliusz (guitar), Wojciech Jachna (trębka), Jakub Łępa (tenor saxophone), Tymon Trębczyński (kontrabas) and Maks Olszewski (drum). During the tour in China, the band will advance the latest single “#36” and the performance album registered as part of the task “JAZZ POLSCU Live Sessions for China & Korea 2022” at the Warsaw club Jassmine, released on Asian streaming platforms.
Project JAZZ POLSKA “About the World”, As part of the Chinese tour, HoTS is inspired by the achievements of Polish traveler Paweł Edmund Strzelecki, who was the first Pole on his own initiative to tour the world. Strzelecki made an extraordinary journey between 1834 and 1843 during which he conducted extended geological and geographical research, contributing to the improvement of cognition about the modern world.
Project JAZZ POLSKA “About the World” is implemented by JAZZ IN POLAND Foundation in cooperation with Polish diplomatic institutions worldwide, as well as with a number of local partners. The partners of the Chinese edition of the task are the Polish Institute in Beijing, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chengdu, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Hong Kong, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Canton, the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Shanghai.

JAZZ "About the World" took the form of an global tour, in which Polish jazz bands will execute on 4 continents in 3 years. The task began last May and will proceed until the end of 2025. To date, more than 100 events have been held in 17 countries with 16 teams. The concerts were held in Albania, Austria, Bangladesh, China, Croatia, India, Israel, Japan, Canada, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Taiwan, Hungary and Vietnam.
