In fresh hours, the dispute between the talker of the Sejm Simon Hołownia and the leader of the Confederation Sławomir Mentzen has intensified, concerning the direction of Polish abroad policy and national safety issues.
During a press conference in the Sejm, Holovnia referred critically to Mentzen's statement, which stated that “you gotta work something out with Putin” about ending the conflict in Ukraine. Hołównia commented:
“I think he gets nervous. I realize that it is hard for him to go to the Kremlin on his first visit, to do all the things he wants to do, to yet get along with Putin, preferably with Germany over our Polish head, but well...”
He besides added:
“The defiling chihuahua was, will be a request to the ethics committee.”
It all started at the end of February, erstwhile the leader of Poland 2050 was asked about increasing support for the Confederate candidate in the polls. At that time, the Hołównia replied decisively:
"I will fight him to the last drop of political blood, due to the fact that this is simply a pest, this is simply a parasite on what we want to build in Poland today".
The Marshal of the Sejm further accused Mentzen of ties to extremist political environments:
“The change Mentzen offers is simply a hand in hand with AfD, that is, with guests who want to push us into Russian hands.”
The Confederate responded rapidly to these words. The head of the party's parliamentary club, Grzegorz Płaczek, informed about the submission of an application to the committee of parliamentary ethics, demanding that the talker of the Sejm be punished for his statements to Mentzen.
The situation was besides commented by Mentzen himself, who on Tuesday's program Guest Events acknowledged that he was “shocked” by Holownia's harsh words. At the same time he referred to political rivalry:
"It was not pleasant, but I showed any knowing for Marshal Holownia. He fights for political life and, unfortunately, this fight loses. If the editor saw a frightened, whimpering chihuahua barking at you, you would feel sorry for him.”
Hołownia besides expressed concerns about the future of Polish safety under the possible leadership of Confederate politicians:
“I don’t want to strain your imagination here, but imagine if you can, that in a fewer years, Mr Mentzen, Mr Berkowicz, Mr Fritz and they are liable for the safety of the Republic.”
He wondered whether these politicians would search to abolish sanctions against Russia and conduct a policy of concessions, or whether they would focus on strengthening Poland's position on the global stage.
In consequence to these statements, Grzegorz Płaczek of the Confederacy applied to the Committee on Ethics for punishing Holownia for ethical abuse, stressing that the public debate should hold a certain level of culture. The news.radiozet.pl
The Hołownia besides raised the issue of national defence funding, proposing the creation of the safety and Defence Fund worth PLN 30 billion to support the defence industry, civilian defence and military technology research.
The dispute between Holovnia and Mentzen reflects deeper divisions in Polish policy regarding the strategy towards Russia and the way in which national safety is ensured. While Mentzen suggests the request to negociate with Putin in order to end the conflict in Ukraine, Holovnia warns against this attitude, stressing the request for a strong policy towards Russia and strengthening Poland's position in Western structures.
It is worth noting that Mentzen was on the list of Ukrainian organization Myrotowiec, who accuses him of “inciting cultural hatred” and “spreading Russian propaganda”. Mentzen himself, however, declares that he is against Russia and has always been.
