II. Sabbatai Zevi, founder of the judaic Sabbathean Movement
Sabbatai Zevi (שַׁבְּתַי צְבִי, another spellings include Sabbatai Ẓevi, Shabbetai Ẓevi, Shabbeṯāy Ṣeḇī, Sabbatai Sevi and Sabetay Sevi in Turkish) (1 August 1626 – c. 17 September 1676) was a Sephardian rabbi and cabalist who claimed to be a long-awaited judaic Messiah. He was the founder of the judaic Sabbath movement. In February 1666, after arriving in Constantinople, Sabbatai was imprisoned at the command of the large vizier Ahmed Köprülü; in September of the same year, after transferring from various prisons in the capital to Adrianopol (the seat of the imperial court) in order to justice charges of incitement to rebellion, Köprülü gave Sabbatai on behalf of Sultan Mehmed IV a choice: either face death as a consequence of any attempt, or control to Islam. Sabbatai seems to choose the latter, assuming a Turkish turban since then. He was then besides rewarded by Ottoman state leaders with a generous pension for the implementation of their political and spiritual plans. any of his followers besides converted to Islam — about 300 families known as Dönmeh (convertites).
