

On 30 September 2025, a historical decision was made for the University of the Sea in Gdynia and for the Polish maritime economy to finance the construction of the successor of “Daru Youth”, for which the legislature of the University with JM Rector Prof. Dr. hab. inż., Captain Adam Weintrit led since 2020. He informed the Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk about the allocation of funds for the construction of the successor of “Daru Youth”.
Today adopted by the Council of Ministers a resolution establishing a multi-annual programme "Construction of Ships for Maritime Universities from 2025 to 2029", prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure, will let the construction of a fresh school ship of the Maritime University of Gdynia and the replacement of the existing unit – "Youth Daru", which has trained more than 25 1000 cadets, future merchant fleet officers since 1982.
The successor of the Youth Gift will supply applicable training for 120 cadets simultaneously. The fresh unit will combine tradition with modernity, allowing for maintaining a advanced level of student education. The ship will be equipped with the latest technologies, while gathering global safety standards. At the same time, students will undergo conventional training at sea as required by the STCW Convention of Practices during a training cruise on a fresh school ship, during which discipline and squad cooperation are highly important, as they are the key to the seafaring profession and frequently decide on the safety of the ship during the cruise.
The fresh training unit will be surrendered to the next generation of future merchant fleet officers in the next 3 years. The course of the work will be monitored by the last year, by the decision of the JM Rector Prof. Dr. hab. inż. ż.w. Adam Weintrit, Follow-up squad for the School Ship ‘Daru Youth’, consisting of experts, including major shipping captains, liable for the work so far to build a fresh school ship at the Maritime University of Gdynia.
