The Metinvest Group completed the construction of the NATO Underground infirmary function 2 in 1 of the most fought sections of the front line in Ukraine. It is maximum protected against location disclosure and possible enemy attacks on the object. This is the second stabilisation centre in the country, established in cooperation with the Ukrainian medical forces under the Rinat Achmetov initiative "Steel Front". The fresh task introduced structural improvements based on experience gained during the operation of the first hospital.
A fresh infirmary for the Armed Forces of Ukraine was built even closer to the front line than the first facility, launched last year. This decision was dictated by the strength of the fighting and the urgent request to supply qualified medical assistance for injured soldiers. To guarantee safety for medical personnel and patients, the facility was buried more than six metres underground and reinforced with additional protective layers.
– According to medical services, the infirmary was designed according to a fresh specification. This enabled us to optimize the installation and equipment of the underground and to introduce additional camouflage solutions at the main escape exits. specified protection measures are crucial for the safety of medical personnel and soldiers, given the critical proximity of the front line. Thanks to our experience in building modular undergrounds, we managed to organize the space even better without losing functionality and performance. The center of stableness is already moving and saving lives for Ukrainian soldiers – stressed Oleksandr Myronenko, Operations manager of the Metinvest Group.
The main component of the second underground infirmary are 4 “huge” bunker modules made of steel supplied by the Metinvest Group. These include surgical and stabilization units, a staff area and a seating area. The full infirmary area is 350 square meters.
– The first underground infirmary built by Metinvest worked perfectly. During the year of operation, paramedics saved more than 6,000 soldiers. But we cannot halt – we are constantly working on creating a universal model of the stabilisation center, which will work anywhere on medical evacuation routes. At the second underground hospital, we utilized optimal solutions to accommodate patients in different states. This is simply a immense reinforcement for Ukrainian medical services. We are grateful to the Metinvest Group for the partnership and flexibility of the solutions that the Group implements – He said Roman Kuziv, Lieutenant Colonel of Medical Services.
In an underground hospital, up to 3 surgeries of varying degrees of complexity can be performed simultaneously.
The full investment of the Metinvest Group is nearly PLN 1.9 million (21 million hryvnia). Metinvest financed the production, transport, assembly and equipment of the hospital. The group besides covered the costs of equipping the facility with household appliances and all essential life support systems in the field. These included, among others, drinking and technological water, electricity, ventilation, sewerage, emergency power or temperature control equipment. The Army provided all essential medical equipment, including infusion pumps, X-ray cameras, oxygen concentraters, defibrillators and another devices. Lifesaving care is provided by a squad of up to 20 experienced doctors, including trauma specialist, surgeons, anesthesiologists, operating nurses and paramedics.
The first underground stabilisation center in Ukraine, created to save the lives of soldiers on the front, was launched in September 2024. The hospital, created by the Metinvest Group in collaboration with medical services, was based on six enlarged steel bunkers made of Metinvest steel and adapted to the needs of the stabilisation center.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the full aid of Metinvest to the country amounted to nearly PLN 821 million 9.3 billion hryvnia), of which more than 430 million PLN (4.9 billion hryvnia) was allocated to support the army under the Rinat Achmetów initiative "Steel Front".
