Although the incidental occurred in August, the Slovak media is only now describing the incidental more broadly. On the night of 23 to 24 August, Ryanair's flight from Gdańsk to Bratislava was redirected to Vienna Airport at the last minute. Reason? Disruption of GPS signal and failure of ground navigation system.
Ryanair from Gdańsk had serious flight problems
– Upon landing, the crew informed us of the disruption of the GPS signal on board the aircraft, as well as the failure of the ground navigation strategy at the airport in Bratislava. This is rather different – 1 of the passengers, quoted by the Slovak media, reported.
The Slovak Air Traffic Service confirmed this information. After refueling in Vienna, the aircraft yet reached Bratislava, landing there at 2:44 a.m.
As we have already written, the distortions of the GPS signal over Poland (and another parts of Europe) are presently reaching an alarming level. Signal monitoring maps indicate that Poland and another countries are frequently in a red region that indicates the highest level of interference.
Such serious disturbances can have a real impact on safety – not only for drone users, but besides for civilian aviation, shipping or even road transport.
Serious GPS interference – Russia is most likely behind it
It is not excluded that interference may be the consequence of deliberate actions conducted from the circuit by Russian radio-electronic combat systems – we have already faced akin signals and situations.
Although navigation systems utilized in aviation have safety features, the escalation of specified activities can seriously disrupt even the operation of transport and communication in the country.
This is not the first time that specified a dangerous event occurs, including in Poland. On June 17, the head of the Ministry of abroad Affairs spoke about this in the programme "Graffiti" on Polsat News. He stressed that the situation was serious and needed decisive action. “Because this is happening in tiny space – I am talking about the confederate Baltic – it affects others too, so this is absolutely unacceptable”, said Tomasz Siemoniak.
