The assembled sang the anthem of Greenland "Nunarput utoqarsuangoravi" (Our old country), and the national flags and banners brought by them left, sticking them in the snow. There was no American flag on the consulate building.

The demonstration was attended by the outgoing Prime Minister Mute B. Egede (left-wing IA party) and winner of Tuesday parliamentary elections and likely future head of Jens-Frederik Nielsen government from the Liberal politician party. Both politicians gave brief speeches.

According to local media, about a 1000 people attended the demonstration and it was 1 of the largest gatherings in the past of the island. Police estimates indicate the participation of about 800 people. On the same day, a smaller manifestation took place besides in the town of Sisimiut.

Trump said at a gathering with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Thursday that he "thinks that Greenland will be joined, and NATO Secretary-General can be very helpful in this". He suggested that the U.S. could send more troops to the island.

On Friday, the heads of all 5 parties in the Greenland Parliament issued a statementIt says they don't accept Trump's repeated statements about taking over the island. "We consider specified behaviour unacceptable to friends and allies in the defence alliance (NATO)," they stressed.

Greenland is an autonomous territory dependent on Denmark, the winner of the last parliamentary election, the politician party, advocates the island's independence, but only after economical independency has been achieved. The Greenland authorities are dependent on grants from the government in Copenhagen.
