Polish border with Belarus closed for an indefinite period! The key trade way from China continues to paralyze
Poland maintains the permanent closure of the border with Belarus, introduced on September 12, 2025, thereby blocking the strategical trade artery between China and the European Union. What was initially intended to be a short-term safety measurement in connection with the Russian-Belarusian maneuvers “Zapad-2025” has evolved into a long-term crisis, the consequences of which are felt both by carriers and the economies of many countries.
The decision to close border crossings was officially taken by the Donald Tusk government in consequence to joint military exercises of Russia and Belarus and in consequence to the unprecedented incidental of September 10, erstwhile 19 Russian drones violated Polish airspace during the attack on Ukraine. Minister of Home Affairs and Administration Marcin Kierwiński stressed that the border would stay closed “until further notice”, and its reopening would only take place if the authorities had “100 % confidence” that there was no threat to the safety of citizens.
Minister of abroad Affairs Radosław Sikorski clearly does not want to solve this problem, as evidenced by the unrealistic additional condition that Poland will open the border with Belarus only erstwhile the Lukashenko government releases political prisoners. This is simply a clear signal that the agreement is far distant and this represents a crucial tightening of Poland's position, which indicates that the closure of the border may take much longer than originally expected. This condition makes the decision to close the border an instrument of political force on the Belarusian government.
The closure affected all border crossings – road, rail and foot. Among them were key crossings for passenger cars (Terespol-Brzeście), trucks (Kukuryki-Kozłowicze) and 3 rail crossings for freight traffic (Kuźnica Białostocka-Grodno, Siemianówka-Swisłocz and Terespol-Brzeście). Poland has besides strengthened border protection, deploying 40,000 soldiers along it.
The economical impact of this decision is far-reaching and affects many sectors. The Polish-Belarusian border passes as much as 90% of rail freight traffic between China and the EU, the value of which is estimated at around EUR 25 billion per year. In 2024, the volume of goods on this way increased by 10.6% and their value by 85% compared to the erstwhile year. The railway presently accounts for 3.7% of all EU-China trade, compared to 2.1% the year before.
Among the most deprived were Chinese e-commerce platforms, specified as Temu and Shein, which utilized the rail connection for fast deliveries to Europe without bearing the cost of air transport. Polish logistics companies besides endure crucial losses. PKP Cargo Connect, Piotr Sadza, warned that if the closure lasted longer, the carriers would be forced to divert the goods via confederate routes through Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea, which would importantly increase costs and extend transportation times.
A peculiarly dramatic situation concerns truck drivers. On the Belarusian side about 1500 Polish vehicles are stuck, which cannot return to the country. Artur Kalisiak of Transport & Logistics Poland stressed that the problem besides concerns about 10,000 Belarusian drivers employed by Polish companies who are stuck on both sides of the border. Many of them were in a hard situation without the chance to return to their homes or jobs.
Belarusian president of the State Customs Committee Vladimir Orlowski reported that most permits for temporary stay of vehicles in Belarus had already expired. If the border is not opened soon, vehicles will be moved to specially designated locations and action may be taken against carriers in accordance with Belarusian legislation.
China is trying to put force on Poland to reconstruct border movement. Chinese abroad minister Wang Yi during his visit to Warsaw on September 16, however, failed to convince Poland to open the border. Chinese MFA spokesperson Lin Jian China-Europe Railway Express as a “flag cooperation task between China and Poland and the EU”, calling for “the safe and smooth operation of the link and the stableness of global supply and production chains”.
The European Commission has stated that it “pretensely monitors” the possible economical impact of border closure. At the same time, Brussels is careful not to criticize Poland with which it expressed solidarity from the beginning of the tensions with Belarus. any analysts propose that Polish actions may be in line with US force on Europe to limit China's function in supporting Russia. erstwhile head of Polish intelligence Piotr Krawczyk stated that Washington is “more than satisfied with the closure of these routes”.
But it's not so sure, due to the fact that USA after the decisive refusal of Polandhas normalised the diplomatic relations of the United States with Belarus. The position of the Polish government is so even more mysterious and it is hard to tell who cares, but alternatively not the Americans, Powermakers are alternatively individual else
