Many people in Poland wonder if Good Friday, which falls on 18 April 2025, will be a public holiday. In this article we will check whether the government has decided to change the calendar of days off and whether Poles will be able to enjoy a long weekend.
Good Friday is simply a day that has been breathtaking for years, due to the fact that in many countries it is an authoritative holiday. In Poland, however, Good Friday is not a public holiday. This means that most workers will gotta go to work on that day. According to the Central Statistical Office, in 2022 there were over 16 million employees in Poland who would gotta go to work on Good Friday.
In the past, there have been proposals to make Good Friday a day off. This is about the bill which entered the Sejm on 5 December 2018, but has not yet been implemented. Unfortunately, despite the proposed changes, the task to guarantee that 18 April 2025 is free from work until present it is not implemented. That is the government's current decision.
Despite the deficiency of statutory leave, any employers decide to introduce a day off on Good Friday as part of interior regulations. Officials and public sector workers request not go to work on Good Friday. In any government institutions (e.g. officials) may have a reduced working day or even a day off, but this is not a rule. According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, in 2022 more than 400,000 public sector workers did not gotta go to work on Good Friday.
Many facilities on Good Friday are a day off from teaching, but this depends on the decision of the school administration. According to the Ministry of Education and Science, in 2022 more than 5 million students were free on Good Friday.
Good Friday is not a public vacation in Poland. This means that shops, supermarkets and buying malls will be opened that day according to standard working hours. According to the Trade and Services Association data, in 2022 more than 20,000 shops and supermarkets were opened on Good Friday.
In conclusion, Good Friday 2025 will not be a public vacation in Poland. Most employees will gotta go to work, but any employers may choose to introduce a day off within interior regulations. Officials and public sector workers do not gotta go to work on Good Friday, and students may be free, but this depends on the decision of the school administration. Shops, supermarkets and buying malls will be opened according to standard working hours.
