ARIZONA- Unical Aviation, a global specialist in commercial aviation aftermarket solutions, has acquired a fleet of Airbus A320neo airframes to launch the industry’s first dedicated disassembly program for the neo-family aircraft.

The initiative comes amid ongoing component shortages affecting the aviation industry, with deliveries set to begin in April 2025.

Industry Significance

Ecube, a Unical Group company and recognized global leader in aircraft storage and end-of-life solutions, will conduct the disassembly operations across its facilities in Coolidge (Arizona), Spain, and Wales. The program represents a significant milestone in Unical’s strategy to expand the availability of next-generation aftermarket materials for the rapidly growing A320neo fleet.

“As the first to launch a disassembly effort on A320neo aircraft, Unical is staying ahead of the curve to meet the evolving needs of our airline and MRO customers… These assets will soon be transformed into high-demand material to support operators worldwide with cost-effective, timely aftermarket solutions.”

David Dicken, EVP of Assets at Unical Aviation

The Airbus A320neo family has established itself as one of the most widely adopted aircraft platforms in commercial aviation.

“This initiative aims to accelerate the availability of next-generation components to the market and reduce turnaround times for critical maintenance, ultimately providing operators with greater efficiency and cost savings.”

A320neos from GoFirst

The company has secured what it describes as a “double-digit quantity” of A320neo aircraft, with deliveries expected over two years.

While Unical has not confirmed the source of these aircraft, a photograph released by the company suggests at least some may originate from defunct Indian carrier Go First (G8), which ceased operations in 2023 after entering bankruptcy protection.

Go First’s financial troubles were largely attributed to maintenance issues with Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines, which forced the grounding of many of its A320neo fleet. The oldest A320neos operated by Go First were delivered approximately ten years ago, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Expert Analysis

Mike Stengel, partner with consultancy AeroDynamic Advisory, called the acquisition of A320neos for parts “a little surprising” given the age of the jets and high global demand for A320neos due to constrained production of new aircraft. However, he noted that acquiring them for parts could be economically practical in specific circumstances. For example, if the aircraft lacked engines and would likely remain engine-less for an extended period due to PW1100G shortages.

By pioneering this program, Unical Aviation reinforces its commitment to providing innovative, sustainable solutions for the aviation industry. This ensures operators have access to essential components when they need them most. This is particularly true as supply chain challenges continue to affect the sector.
