Karol Nawrocki's last crucial veto – as it turns out – echoed widely not only in Poland but besides in the world. The owner of Tesla, SpaceX and social networking portal X (formerly Twitter) Elon Musk commented on the deficiency of a signature under the Digital Services Act. The richest man in the planet summed up the decision of the Polish president with 1 word: “Bravo!”.

Last Friday, president Karol Nawrocki vetoed as many as 3 laws, but the deficiency of signing 1 of them sparked the biggest discussion. It is simply a draft amendment to the Act on the provision of services by electronic means, on which the head of state did not agree.

The amendment constituted the implementation of the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which was to "protect network users" and let power to respond more rapidly to "abuse" – provided after the adoption of the task in the Sejm Ministry of Digital Affairs. Otherwise, the DSA perceives an opposition that immediately after the adoption of the legislative act raised an alarm.

"The coalition of 13 December just opened the gateway to censorship on the web. DSA is simply a real threat to freedom of speech. Tell halt before it's besides late," warned PiS politicians.

According to DSA's opponents, in the act they are sewn “furks” for the usage of censorship, including blocking in the network of content uncomfortable for the government under the pretext of “disinformation” or “security threats”. According to critics, the government or its subordinate organizations could block content without a judgment, i.e. on the basis of arbitrary decisions or subjective opinions and controlling views. Inspections should be carried out by ‘trusted signallers’.

When vetoing the Nawrocka project, he called it “absurd” and giving control of the content in the network “officers subordinate to the government”. The president compared the initiative to the “ministerial of truth” in George Orwell's 1984 novel.

"As president, I cannot sign a law which in practice means administrative censorship. All the more so, due to the fact that it identified the anticipation of financing alleged trusted signallers, who for public money would indicate illegal content and citizens who expressed specified views," said Karol Nawrocki.
