Glory to the Heroes

78 years ago, the conflict Group of the AK “Krybar” began a heroic fight for the territory of the University of Warsaw. As all year, on the campus close Krakowskie Przedmieście, the academic community commemorated the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. “It is simply a large lesson to our people about courage, unity, solidarity and the importance of cooperation, national and international”, said Prof. Jerzy Gadźcki, president of the Environment of Soldiers of the conflict Group “Krybar” in the planet Association of Soldiers of the AK. A mural referring to the heroic battles of 1944 was besides unveiled.

On the day of the outbreak, on 1 August 1944, the 8th Grouping of the 1st territory of the AK Warsaw-Śródmieście Oblast attempted to reflect the University of Warsaw from the business hands of German troops. This unit was already called “Krybar”. On 5 August, the group was merged with 2 another units, forming the conflict Group “Krybar”. Subsequent attempts to take over the territory of the University were made on 23 August and 2 September. In 2014, the UW legislature distinguished Battle Group “Krybar” UW Medal.

Every year on campus in Krakowskie Przedmieście, at the plaque commemorating the heroes of these events, The University of Warsaw together with the environment of the conflict Group “Krybar” of the planet Association of National Army Soldiers organizes a commemorative ceremony combined with the collection of flowers.

It is simply a large honor and honor for me to be able to bow before you on behalf of the full community of the University, but I think that Warsaw and Poland too. I would like to say "thank you" and guarantee that the University remembers, will remember and will always be with you," said Prof. Alojzy Z. Nowak, Rector of the University of Warsaw.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the AK's combat group “Krybar”, including Prof. Jerzy Gaździcki, ps. “Gołęb”, president of the Environment of Soldiers of the conflict Group “Krybar” in the planet Union of Soldiers of the AK, as well as the boy of the armored vehicle designer “Kubusz” Marek Fernik and the president of the Warsaw territory of the planet Soldiers Association of the AK Kazimierz Kowalczyk.

The Academic Choir of the University sang insurgent songs, including the anthem of the group "Krybar" – "The Password of Powiśla" by Alexander Dunin.

– The Warsaw Uprising was the largest conflict fought in planet War II by conspiracy organizations. Militaryly, it was directed against Nazi Germans, but politically against Stalinist Russia, which we remembered before the uprising, in peculiar Katyn and Siberia. This is simply a large lesson for our nation: courage, unity, solidarity, and the importance of cooperation both within the nation and global cooperation," said Prof. Gadźdecki.

Mural ‘Krybar’

Further to the ceremony, there was a presentation of the mural referring to the historical minute erstwhile during the Warsaw Uprising the insurgents of the conflict Group “Krybar” tried to take the university's territory from the hands of the occupiers. It will get a fragment of the opposition wall, which from the side of Kazimierz Park and Oboźna Street surrounds the Warsaw University.

– We are pleased that present we are going – even virtually – beyond the walls of our university and that from now on we will be able to share the memory of our heroic insurgents with everyone, including the inhabitants of Warsaw and with tourists visiting the capital. We believe that in this way, although in part we do our work to the Heroes of those events, but besides to the posterity, to future generations,” said Robert Grey, Chancellor of the University of Warsaw.

The author of the mural task is Mikołaj Olizar-Zakrzewski, a postgraduate of the Faculty of Graphics and Painting of the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. A band of specified pans and Adam Walas artists were liable for performing the mural.

Participants will be able to receive a publication "Kribar. Reminiscences”, published by the Museum of the University of Warsaw on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.
