Germany responds powerfully to Trump's duties. "The conflict must be over"

If customs cannot be agreed, the EU must be prepared to take decisive steps towards the US, according to the Vice Chancellor of Germany and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil.


US president Donald Trump has threatened the EU to introduce 30% tariffs since 1 August, expanding force during ongoing negotiations on this issue. According to the German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, the talks must continue, but the Union must prepare for the eventual fiasco of negotiations.

In Klingbeil's assessment, everyone loses on Trump's duties. "They endanger the American economy at least to the same degree as companies in Europe. That is why this tariff conflict must be completed," said German paper minister Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

He called for deescalation on both sides. "No 1 needs fresh threats or provocations right now. Instead, we request the EU to proceed with serious and targeted negotiations with the US. Europe remains united and determined: We want a fair deal," Klingbeil stressed.

"We won't agree to anything"


At the same time, however, the German government makes it clear that it does not intend to humbly adopt Trump's policy. "If a fair solution is not negotiated, we must take decisive measures to defend jobs and businesses in Europe," said the leader of the German Social Democrats.

In his opinion, these measures must be prepared. "Our hand remains stretched out, but we will not agree to everything" - he stressed.

Klingbeil besides talked about the request to grow trade relations in another directions. "At the same time, we must further strengthen our global trade relations with another countries. We will besides talk about free and trade-based at the G20 Finance Ministers gathering in South Africa this week," he announced.

Trump's trade conflict


In early April, the president of the United States caused a customs conflict with trading partners worldwide, including the EU. He first announced advanced import duties for the EU and many another countries, but reduced them to a basic rate of 10 percent, giving 90 days to negociate on this matter. On Monday, he extended the deadline until 1 August. Since then, he has already informed more than 20 countries in letters which work rates will apply to them from that date.

EU cars are already subject to an increased work rate of 25 percent in the US. Importers of steel and aluminium products must pay 50 % additional charges, including steel utilized in the manufacture of refrigerators and washing machines.

Brussels prepared retaliation duties on US products worth around €21 billion, but they were suspended during the negotiations. The first EU list includes American products specified as jeans and motorcycles.

Sunday (13.07.2025) The European Commission has informed of the postponement of the implementation of higher duties by 1 August. They were expected to enter life on Monday (14.07.2025).

EU Trade Ministers are expected to meet in Brussels on Monday to consult on Trump's letter.
