

German defence minister Boris Pistorius powerfully criticized the Friday speech of U.S. Vice president J.D. Vance at the Munich safety Conference.
Pistorius accused Vance of questioning democracy in Europe and compared the situation in part of the continent to the situation in authoritarian regimes.
Pistorius: This is unacceptable
– This is unacceptable," Pistorius said, to which the conference participants responded with long applause. He stressed that the Europe presented by the US Vice president is not a Europe in which he lives and conducts an election campaign.
– In this democracy, all view has a voice," the SPD politician stressed. He explained that parties in extremist parts, specified as the alternate for Germany (AfD), may conduct an election campaign, like all another groups.
– Democracy, however, does not mean that a loud number is automatically right and decides the truth. Democracy must be able to defend itself against extremists who want to destruct it," Pistorius said.
Pistorius’ objection to Vance’s words
"I am energetically opposed to the impression that Vice president Vance left that in our democracy minorities are being persecuted and that they are being forced to stay silent. We know not only who we defend our country against, but besides what we are fighting for – for democracy, freedom of speech, the regulation of law and the dignity of all man – emphasized the clearly agitated head of the German Ministry of Defence.
Vance said earlier that Europe's biggest threat is not Russia is China, but the threat from within, that is, the retreat of Europe from any of the most basic values.
The American vice president full devoted his speech to the harsh criticism of European democracy in Munich, accusing Europe of moving distant from its own values, utilizing censorship, ignoring voters and persecuting Christians. He considered it the top threat to the continent.

– The threat I am most worried about in Europe is not Russia, it is not China, it is not any another external actor. What I am most worried about is the threat from within, the retreat of Europe from any of its most basic values, values shared with the United States of America," Vance stated. As 1 of the main examples indicated the cancellation of presidential elections in Romania, as well as the fight against misinformation.
