The fresh rules on home tasks in primary schools came into force from 1 April, making crucial changes in the way students are assessed and worked with students. The amendment of the regulation on the assessment, classification and promotion of pupils and listeners in public schools introduces restrictions on home tasks for classes I-III and changes the approach to assessment in classes IV-VIII.
Provisions for the fresh school year: Changes in homework
Under the fresh regulations, primary school teachers are required to limit the assignment of homework, excluding exercises to improve tiny motorism. For students of these classes, performing specified exercises becomes compulsory and the teacher can measure their performance.
The Ministry of Education explains that the introduction of specified restrictions is due to the request to realize and respond to the expectations of the school community and to adapt the way schools work, especially in the context of learning younger children after the spring break.
Homework in Class I-III: improvement of tiny motorism in the spotlight
The amendment foresees that a teacher can only do practical/technical or written homework in exceptional cases, focusing mainly on exercises improving tiny motorism. According to the justification for the draft amendment, the improvement of this skill is crucial in early school education, as precise hand movements affect the ability to compose or draw.
In practice, this means that homework in these classes will be more varied and adapted to the improvement needs of children, allowing them to exercise and make writing or drawing skills more effectively.
Homework in Class IV-VIII: A fresh Approach to Assessment
For students of classes IV-VIII, the fresh provisions supply that homework is not compulsory, and the teacher is obliged to supply the student with feedback on his work, indicating what has been done correctly and what needs to be done further work and what further steps in the learning process.
Home tasks in these classes may include longer written statements, a solution to mathematical tasks or applicable and method work. However, they will no longer be compulsory and will not be evaluated to reduce teacher force and focus on an effective learning process.
It is besides crucial to note that these rules aim at balancing the burden on school pupils and adapting school work to their improvement and educational needs. The task of teachers is now to consciously adapt homework to the needs of students, which is intended to contribute to more effective learning and knowing of the material. As of 1 April, fresh rules are in force to restrict the assignment of housework
