The head of the German MFA Johann Wadephul of the CDU is not afraid of worsening Polish-German relations after Karol Nawrocki won the presidential election.

"I am absolutely certain that a deep Polish-German relationship will not be affected by these elections," Wadephul said on Wednesday (04.06.2025) during a proceeding in the Bundestag. "We can build a good future together," he added.

Concerns that relations can cool down after the election, express Polish and German public opinion, due to the harsh declarations made by Karol Nawrocki and playing besides in this run on anti-German emotions.

The real current problem in relations between Poland and Germany (between governments) is the issue of migration: border controls and announcements of the return of illegal migrants to Poland, which is powerfully opposed by the government in Warsaw.

Wadepuhl: fresh President, but Old Government

Wadephul pointed out in the Bundestag that, despite the change in the Presidential Palace, the pro-European government of Prime Minister Tusk remained in power. "The simple fact is: there is simply a fresh president, but the old government continues".

As he pointed out, Tusk runs a government that "with Germany, France and Italy belongs to active engines of common growth in the European Union".

He announced that he wanted to proceed working with Poland in a "friendly, constructive dialogue" to guarantee that Warsaw would proceed to support Ukraine against Russian aggressors.

According to the German minister, this is besides in Poland's interest: "Because Poland knows: the more effective Ukraine defends its sovereignty, the safer Poland will besides live".

In the afternoon Wadephul accepted his Polish counterpart Radosław Sikorski. Following talks at the Ministry of abroad Affairs, a joint press conference was held.

"We managed the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border with a large amount of resources. Migrants thrown by Belarus as part of the hybrid war do not scope Germany. Therefore, we consider the controls on the Polish-German border unnecessary" - said Sikorski.

"We request border protection – but they should not be at the expense of our societies," added the Polish head of the Ministry of abroad Affairs.
