The Franciscans in Sweden end up with the Trident Mass. erstwhile ‘misunderstandings’

The Franciscans celebrated the Trident Mass at Goteborg, Sweden. They will no longer – they decided to suspend it, citing misunderstandings among the believers.

On their website, they published a message about the Trident Mass in Jonsered close Goteborg. It reads as follows:

For respective years, the brothers from the Delegation of St John the Baptist of the 3rd Regular Order have celebrated Mass in the Franciscan monastery according to the 1962 Roman Mass, which is an extraordinary form of liturgy of the Church. These masses, usually celebrated on Sundays at 12:00 am, are additional to the Mass in average form, celebrated at 10:00 pm.

“Liturgical diversity can be a origin of enrichment, but it can besides origin tensions and common misunderstandings and even schisms. It is clear that diversity should not harm unity in this area. It can talk only as a part of faithfulness to the common faith, to the sacramental signs which the Church received from Christ, and to the hierarchical community. Cultural adaptation requires conversion of the heart, and if necessary, besides breaking the ancestral customs incompatible with the Catholic faith" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1206).

Recently, we have been reminded that there may be any tensions or misunderstandings among faithful Christians in our diocese concerning the performance of any sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church in their various forms. We fear that these tensions or misunderstandings may harm the unity of our community.

After consulting the diocesan bishop and following the advice of our minister-general, we, the brothers of the Franciscan monastery, will temporarily cease the formality Mass in accordance with the 1962 Roman Mass until further guidance on how to resolve these tensions or misunderstandings. We will proceed to execute the liturgy in average form during our regular Holy Mass.

The last Trident Mass will take place on August 10th, and if there is simply a request in the future to execute mass in average form at 12:00, we will be pleased to do so.
