Pope Francis wrote in his will that he did not want to be buried in the Vatican, but in the Roman basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, and in the published will indicated that his grave should be simple and without large ornaments.
According to the Pope's will, he always entrusted his life, as well as the priestly ministry and bishopric of the parent of God, and wanted his last earthly journey to end in this basilica, where he came to pray at the beginning and at the end of all apostolic visit.
“I ask that my temporal remains remainder in anticipation of the day of resurrection in the papal basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore,” says the document.
In his will, the pope asked that the burial place be the niche in the side aisle at the chapel with the widely worshipped icon of Our woman Salus Populi Romani ("Salvation of the Roman People").
"The tomb is to be in the ground; simple, without peculiar decorations and with 1 inscription: Francis" – we read in the will, which was published by the Vatican press office.
The deceased took care of the burial costs in advance and gave instructions. The funds for the coming expenses have already been transferred to the basilica.
The procedure of the ceremony of the Pope is governed by a peculiar church document, the Apostolic Constitution of the Universi Dominici Gregis (the Universal home of the Lord), issued by Pope John Paul II. According to this document, the burial of the Pope must take place within 4 to six days after his death.
Pope Francis died Monday morning at the age of 88. On February 14, he went to the Roman Gemella Clinic to examine and proceed the treatment of bronchitis. Later studies revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia. While in the hospital, the Pope underwent 4 respiratory crises. According to doctors moving his life, he was twice at risk. On March 20, Pope Francis was discharged from the infirmary after 5 weeks of treatment for pneumonia.
On Monday evening, the Vatican announced that the origin of Francis' death was a stroke caused by many chronic diseases.
