The home of Peace Foundation was to organize a seminar at the Centre for the past of the depot in Wrocław, which was to be devoted to the subject of “treatment of Volynska trauma”. An event called ‘Is Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation possible? Treatment of the Volyn trauma" was originally to take place on 15 December that year at the Wrocław Center for the past of the depot.
The initiator of this task was the home of Peace Foundation. However, after announcing the planned seminar, it provoked controversy and outrage on the network. As a consequence of the negative reception, the organizers decided to cancel the lecture. Nevertheless, they assured that the event would be held at another time.
On 5 December, the organizers informed about the postponement of the planned event. So far, no fresh date has been set. The authoritative message stressed that this decision was taken due to the intense emotion that the subject has caused, both among organizers and invited panelists. Seminar entitled ‘Is Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation possible? Treatment of Volyn trauma", originally scheduled for 15 December, changed both in terms of time and formula.
Currently, the home of Peace Foundation website has no detailed description of the planned event and detailed information on the planned panelists. The Community and Memory Association expressed concerns this week, noting that Ukrainians are among the planned speakers, while there are no witnesses to genocide, Kresowian and recognized researchers of this subject.
As a consequence of the genocide in Volyn and east Małopolska, at least 100 1000 Poles were killed.
The Volynian Crime was committed by the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN-B), as well as the Ukrainian Pows dancing Army (UPA). Part of the Ukrainian population took part in these activities, which actively participated in the killing of Polish neighbours and plundering their property. OUN-UPA described these activities as an “anti-Polish action”, hiding behind this word the intention to execution and expel Poles.
The first mass execution took place on 9 February 1943 in Parosla I, in the Sarne district, where UPA, impersonating initially russian guerrillas, murdered 173 Poles.
The severity of the crime was linked, among another things, to the desertion of Ukrainian police officers for Germany in March and April 1943, who later joined UPA, many of whom had previously participated in the execution of Jews. 1 of the biggest crimes before July 1943 was the attack on Janowa Dolina on the night of 22rd to 23rd April 1943, during which the settlement was burned down, and about 600 Poles were murdered.
In July 1943, there was an increase in crime erstwhile about 10-11 1000 Poles were murdered. UPA carried out a coordinated attack on Poles in 150 localities in the districts of Włodzimierzy, Horochowski, Kowelski and Łutsk, specially choosing Sundays erstwhile Poles went to churches at Holy Mass. Ukrainian nationalists invaded the churches, killing civilians and clergymen, which occurred among others in Kisielina and Poryck. About 50 Catholic churches were destroyed in Volyn and crimes continued in subsequent days and later.
