Finland welcomes the French initiative of enhanced atomic deterrence, but does not rush to join it. We will examine it and make our own decisions," said Finnish diplomat Elina Valtonen.
According to the Finnish abroad Minister, NATO's atomic deterrence will proceed to be "essentially" based on the possible of US atomic weapons.
– There is no rush in specified a crucial substance and there is no request to rapidly set the time frame," she added.
Minister for Defence Antti Häkkänen stated in turn that the initiative to extend atomic deterrence and start discussions on this issue is beneficial, but it is simply a task calculated for years and even decades and at the same time very expensive. “This is the case for any major strategical change,” he added. He admitted that Finland had been informed of the French beginning in advance, and although it did not receive an authoritative invitation to the project, it was besides not excluded from it.
The head of the Ministry of Defence recalled that for Europe the long-term military threat is Russia, which uses atomic weapons in its rhetoric and puts force on it, and besides invests importantly in the arms sector. Therefore, he concluded, France's position serves to unite on the continent in defence on a large scale.
Finland has the longest border in the EU with Russia of more than 1,300 km.
