The draft amendment of the atomic Energy Act presented by the centre-right government of Petteri Orpo assumes that, if required by the defence of a country or NATO, it will be possible to import, transit or carry atomic weapons by Finland. The current, in absolute practice, atomic weapons ban in the country was adopted in 1987. The line of abroad and safety policy of then president Mauno Koivisto was based on military non-involvement, the thought of a nuclear-free country, and the promotion of disarmament and prevention of atomic proliferation.
