Finland has decided to join the French “Forward Deterrence” initiative. This is simply a crucial change, as Helsinki initially took a cautious approach and did not immediately decide to support the French proposal. Now Finland is combining 1 of Europe’s strongest conventional armed forces with participation in an additional European atomic deterrence framework. For France, this decision is equally important, as Paris is becoming increasingly present not only on NATO’s east flank but besides throughout the Nordic region.
