On the night of Tuesday for Wednesday Lithuania stopped the traffic of trucks and passenger cars at the border with Belarus. At 3:00 p.m. traffic was stopped through the border crossing “Solenics” (from the Belarusian side “Beniakon”) and from 5:00 p.m. traffic through the border crossing “Miedniki” (the Stone Log), informs the Customs Committee of Belarus.

The crossing the border was resumed around 9 a.m.

The Lithuanian side informs that the decision was taken by the commander of the State Border Service of Lithuania Rustamas Liubajevas: “This is an action to guarantee safety in relation to balloons launched from Belarus to Lithuania at night”.

Lithuanian media reports an unusually large number of weather probes with smuggled cigarettes fired from Belarus. Vilnius police study respective twelve weather probes. As a result, even Vilnius airport operations were stopped: around 30 flights were cancelled.

The head of the Lithuanian National Emergency Management Centre Vilmantas Vitkauskas called the night wave of smuggling meteorological probes 1 of the largest “invasions” this year. According to him, smuggling balloons from Belarus were detected in 5 regions, including straight in Vilnius.

“The last wave was registered close the airport. The area is very wide, indicating that the strength was very high. This most likely wasn't from 1 point, but it was a coordinated operation," said Vitkauskas in an interview with the LRT radio.

It was reported that 1 individual had been detained and 8 balloons were found.
