“Burgers”, “steeks” and “sleek” on censored? An different vote will be held in the European Parliament. However, carnivores can sleep peacefully.

On Tuesday, the European Parliament will vote on a ban on the usage of names specified as ‘burger’, ‘sleek’ or ‘stek’ for plant products. Although the European Commission initially proposed to limit the names of the kind of beef or chicken to the designation of vegetable foods, the list was extended.

Supporters of the ban say that “meat” names of the “burger” kind are misleading to consumers and harm the meat industry. Adversaries, including plant replacement producers and vegetarian organizations, indicate that the products are clearly labelled as vegan and do not confuse consumers. In 2024, the EU Court of Justice ruled that the current rules were adequate and that associate States could not, for example, prohibit the word ‘vegan burger’ themselves.

The vote in the Euro-Parliament does not prejudge changes yet - it will only be a mandate for further negotiations with EU countries.
