"We are finishing the first package of remedies in consequence to US steel duties, we will prepare another to defend our interests," stated European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday morning. However, as she stressed, it is not besides late to resolve the problems through negotiations.
U.S. president Donald Trump signed on Wednesday a regulation imposing "counterfeit duties" at a rate of at least 10% on goods imported from abroad and, in the case of the European Union, 20%. Trump described them as America's “declaration of economical independence” and “the day of liberation”.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, responded to Trump's move.
“Unity is our strength”
– I know that many of you feel disappointed by our oldest ally," said von der Leyen in consequence to US president Donald Trump's announcement of customs duties on goods from all over the world.
As she stressed, the consequences of the duties will be "dramatic" for the full world.
– We request to prepare for the impact that this will inevitably have. Europe has everything it needs to last the storm. We are in this together," said the EC President. “Unity is our strength,” she said. She added, it is not besides late to resolve the problems through negotiations, and the Commissioner for Trade Maroszo Chief Executive is ready for the dialogue.
– We will work on reducing barriers, not lifting them," she noted.
Earlier, Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded to Trump's decision. "Friendship means partnership. Partnership means a truly common tariff. Appropriate decisions are needed," he wrote on the X portal.
