NATO and European countries are working to address Greenland. U.S. president Donald Trump openly stated that the United States should own an Arctic island for ownership. The Danish – the formal owners of Greenland – and those who aspire to declare Greenlandic independency do not agree to this. The largest countries of Europe – France, Germany and the United Kingdom – consider sending a joint North Atlantic Alliance mission to the Arctic.

Donald Trump's threat of Greenland's capture by the United States forces the smaller NATO countries to find an indirect solution. The president of the United States believes that the Danes are incapable to defend the Arctic island against Chinese ships and troops and Russia. Yesterday Trump mocked Greenland's defense, calling it "two dogs in a team".

European capitals are trying to cool Trump's urges towards Greenland

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte reported that the Alliance is working on a solution that will satisfy both Americans and Denmark and European countries. 1 of the ideas is the creation of a separate command modeling Operation Baltic Sentry to defend underwater cables and critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. Command consists of ships and water-protection aircraft. akin forces could be deployed to defend Greenland.

Bloomberg's anonymous sources study in turn that Germany intends to launch an initiative to propose the creation of a joint NATO mission to monitor and defend the interests of the Alliance in the Arctic. France and the United Kingdom want to increase their presence in Greenland alongside Germany.

However, it is not known how Washington will view these ideas, which seems to fortify on the western hemisphere, despite the opinion of European capitals. Trump late stated that the U.S. objectives in the Arctic could not be achieved without Greenland being owned. He stressed that he wanted a deal with Greenland – simply or “in a more hard way”. The American president had not previously ruled out taking the island by force. He besides considered one-off transfers for the island's inhabitants – from $10,000 to $100,000 – to convince the Greenlandians to “be Americans”.
