According to the latest Speedtest Global Index, Tajikistan is at the very end of Eurasia in terms of fixed broadband speed, taking 117th place in 155 countries worldwide. Dushanbe was not even ranked in terms of mobile connection speed.
Churszed Faizullozoda, head of the Presidential Agency for Digital Innovation and Technology, blamed the mountains for communications problems in Tajikistan. "About 93% of Tajikistan's territory is occupied by mountains, making net access difficult" — quoted by government agency Jumhuriyat.
He added that plans were being developed to increase server capacity and install fibre lines to improve net performance across the country. He then made a vague mention to the private sector playing an crucial function in this process.
"The 5G network will shortly be full implemented in the country", Faizullozoda promised, without going into detail, said Asia-Plus.
