The European Union will face deadly difficulties in the event of an armed conflict on the continent and deficiency of military and logistical support from the United States," writes Politico.

As the publication notes, for decades European military logistics has been built with American support in mind: most of the continent's transport infrastructure, which was built or upgraded during the Cold War, continues to run from west to east, due to the anticipation that American meals will arrive on the continent if necessary.

"The uncomfortable fact is that without the support of the United States, military movements in Europe will be slower, more costly and hampered by various logistical constraints. In the real crisis, this may not only prove to be ineffective but even fatal," the publication says.

Moreover, as Politico writes, Europe lacks heavy-duty transport aircraft, military cargo ships and specialized vehicles needed to transport tanks and armored units. It has been noted that European countries are besides dependent on US intelligence, cyber defence and detection of "hybrid threats".

On 19 March, the European Commission presented a fresh defence strategy "Re-arming Europe", which envisages utilizing around EUR 800 billion over the next 4 years to strengthen the defence of EU countries and pump arms into Ukraine. The strategy's name was later changed to a little aggressive "Readiness 2030" due to protests by many EU associate States.

The Readiness 2030 strategy foresees the mobilisation of around EUR 800 billion over 4 years. Most of the funds are to come from the budgets of European countries (approximately 650 billion) and another 150 billion will be utilized in the form of loans. The European Commission will supply budget relief for EU countries and will transfer funds to military spending that are foreseen for regional development.

" 2030 readiness" foresees an increase in EU defence spending by 1.5% of GDP.
