It has happened, the European Union has banned the registration of combustion cars since 2035. But not all of them. Under German pressure, an agreement was reached allowing the registration of certain combustion cars.
Overall, as of 2035, we will no longer registry fresh cars with a combustion engine in EU countries. On Tuesday, the EU Council adopted a regulation setting stricter CO2 emanation standards for fresh passenger and commercial vehicles. The regulation assumes a 100% simplification in carbon dioxide emissions for fresh vehicles after 2035.
– I am pleased that the EU is fulfilling its promises from the Fit for 55 package. The fresh government will make opportunities for state-of-the-art technologies and an impetus for manufacture to invest in a future free of fossil fuels – says Romina Pourmokhtari, Swedish climate and environment minister.
The ban will not cover absolutely all combustion cars. For sale and registration, those that can only ride CO2-neutral fuels will be allowed. In practice, it's synthetic fuels.
Synthetic fuels are liquid or gaseous fuels that are synthesized from non-oil-based sources specified as coal, natural gas, biomass and even carbon dioxide. These fuels can be produced in various processes, including gasification, liquefaction and pyrolysis.
