Although Catania, the region's main city, remained intact and the airport operated smoothly, the situation recalls the unpredictable force of nature. 3 key facts: The eruption course began around 4:00 a.m. local time. The detonation was the consequence of a partial collapse of the north wall of the southeastern crater, resulting in a pyroclastic flow – a mix of hot gases, ash and rocks moving at advanced speed.
