A bold Emmanuel Macron declaration on Palestine. "In the coming months"

France is with Saudi Arabia co-hosting a June conference, pushing for two state solution. Macron stated that he hoped that participants who did not formally recognise Israel would do the same.

"We must strive for designation and we will do so in the coming months" said the French president. "I do not do this for unity or to delight 1 or another. I am doing this due to the fact that at any point it will be fair.”

Macron's comments came after Israel resumed bombing the Gaza Strip Last month. The two-month truce ended, and talks of ceasefire between Israel and Hamas broke down. Since then, Israelis have halted the transportation of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.

The Israeli war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, during which 1.2 000 people were killed and 250 were taken hostage. The Hamas-led wellness ministry says more than 50,000 people died as a consequence of the conflict in Gaza. This figure includes both civilian and militant casualties.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has a deep resonance in France that is home to the largest judaic and Muslim communities in Europe. The country has always advocated a two-state solution, but resisted calls for designation of the Palestinian state, frequently arguing that Paris would only do so if it served the peace process.

Macron's comments emerged at the end of a three-day journey to Egypt, during which the president visited a infirmary treating Palestinians in the city of Al-Arish, close the border with the Gaza Strip. “I want to believe in peace. present the conflict has intensified and is terrible.
