The negotiations face key hurdles—A380 certification and local service approvals in the UAE, China, and Russia.

The Dubai-based airline aims to replace its current Sita OnAir Wi-Fi, which passengers often find slow and unreliable, with Starlink’s high-speed service capable of supporting live streaming and gaming at 38,000 feet.
According to Bloomberg, the deal could significantly elevate Emirates’ inflight experience, aligning with growing passenger demand for seamless connectivity. However, the negotiations face technical, regulatory, and financial challenges that could delay or derail the partnership.
Starlink, a division of SpaceX, operates a constellation of over 6,750 low Earth orbit satellites, delivering speeds up to 500 Mbps with near-global coverage. Unlike traditional in-flight Wi-Fi systems, Starlink’s equipment can be installed in half the time, minimizing aircraft downtime.
Emirates’ current Wi-Fi offerings are limited, with free access restricted to elite Skywards members and chat functionality for others, making a fleet-wide upgrade a priority to stay competitive.
A major obstacle is Starlink’s lack of certification for the Airbus A380, which comprises over 40% of Emirates’ fleet. The double-deck superjumbo requires specific approvals that SpaceX has not yet obtained, and no timeline for certification exists.
This could force Emirates to prioritize its Boeing 777s or newer Airbus A350s, which are already equipped with faster ViaSat Global Xpress Wi-Fi, for initial Starlink retrofits.
Regulatory barriers also loom large. Starlink is not authorized for use in the United Arab Emirates, Emirates’ home base, nor in China and Russia, which are critical markets for the airline. These restrictions limit Starlink’s coverage over local territorial waters and land, potentially disrupting service on key routes.
A government-owned carrier may need high-level negotiations to secure approvals, with one source suggesting discussions have involved government entities rather than the airline alone.

Negotiations are reportedly stalled over Starlink’s pricing model, which charges per seat regardless of occupancy.
Emirates prefers a model based on occupied seats, reflecting its operational realities and cost concerns. This disagreement could impact the deal’s feasibility, as Emirates seeks to balance offering free or affordable Wi-Fi with maintaining profitability.
Unlike Qatar Airways, which provides free Starlink Wi-Fi on its Boeing 777s, no airline using Starlink currently charges passengers for unlimited access, setting a precedent Emirates may need to follow.
Emirates faces pressure to keep pace with rivals like Qatar Airways (QR), which has equipped its Boeing 777 fleet with Starlink and plans to upgrade its Airbus A350s by 2026.
Other airlines, including Hawaiian Airlines, Air Baltic, and United Airlines, have also adopted Starlink, citing its reliability and speed. Meanwhile, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, with 27 satellites launched recently, emerges as a potential alternative, though its limited infrastructure makes it less viable for Emirates’ immediate needs.
Reliable in-flight Wi-Fi has become a critical passenger expectation, especially post-pandemic, as travelers demand connectivity for work and entertainment, PYOK flagged. Emirates’ current tiered Wi-Fi system, offering free chat for Skywards members and premium access for others, lags behind competitors providing free, high-speed internet.
A successful Starlink partnership could position Emirates as a leader in passenger experience, potentially unlocking premium revenue streams by appealing to business travelers. However, failure to address these challenges risks falling behind in the inflight connectivity race.
