Children under 15 may be excluded from social media

Roman Gierty, erstwhile Minister of Education and current associate of the Civic Coalition, announced that, following Australian solutions, it is planned to ban the usage of social media by children under 15.

After talking to Ms Monika Rosa, chair of the Committee on Children and Youth, I went to the MEN and spoke to Mrs Barbara Nowacka and we agreed that this would be our joint parliamentary initiative. The politician stressed that the aim of the initiative is to defend children from the harmful effects of algorithms and social media addictions which negatively affect the psyche and academic performance, and encouraged all parliamentary clubs to support the project.

Support for different environments

The task was jointly submitted by Education Minister Barbara Nowacka and associate of the Roman Giertych Civic Coalition. Cooperation itself attracts attention due to the fact that it brings together politicians with different worldviews. According to information Policies, this may increase the chances of supporting the initiative not only among liberal but besides more conservative environments.

Preliminary statements of support for the planned restrictions were to come from almost all clubs and parliamentary circles.

Lack of effective verification

Currently in Poland, the minimum age of social media usage is 13 years, including Facebook, Instagram and TikToka. In practice, however, these platforms are besides utilized by younger children due to the fact that the age of users is not effectively verified.

In late 2025, Australia introduced a ban on the usage of social media for people under 16, which sparked a broad discussion on the anticipation of introducing akin regulations in another countries.
