Dramatic egg price increase before Easter

Easter comes in large steps, and with it conventional shopping. Unfortunately, this year Christmas dishes can be importantly more costly – all due to the sharp emergence in egg prices. According to the latest data, only in March their prices went up by 13.6%.

Eggs more costly than last year. How much are they now?

From the survey ‘Retail price index’ it appears that in January the average price of eggs in stores was PLN 0,98, i.e. 11.3% more than last year. However, prices continued to emergence in the following months. In February we paid for 1 egg on average 0,99 zł, and by March already exceeded gold.

Analysts foretell that in April, just before Easter, prices can be even by 10-15% higher than in the same period last year.

Why are the eggs so expensive?

Experts shall indicate respective key reasons for this situation:

• High production costs – they cost feed, energy and employment of workers.
• Inflation – the overall increase in prices in the economy besides affects basic food products.
• Seasonality – In winter, egg production falls due to natural biological constraints of chickens.
• Avian influenza – the epidemic affected the simplification of laying hens.

"The infrastructure utilized in the production process requires crucial energy inputs. In addition, seasonality occurs – egg supply usually declines in winter” – explains Dr. Robert Orpych from the University of WSB Merito in an interview with Business Insider.

Is Poland in danger of deficiency of balls? Ministry of Agriculture

There was news in the media about alleged egg deficits in stores. The Ministry of Agriculture powerfully denies this:

"Extremely noticeable deficiencies may only apply to free-range eggs, which can be the consequence of the activities of the commercial networks which have withdrawn the product from their offer" – reads the authoritative release.

It besides added that "getting safe food at a price acceptable to consumers, which becomes the implementation of ideological slogans, carries the turmoil we are witnessing in many countries of the world".

If you are planning Easter shopping, it is worth considering early acquisition of eggs – prices will most likely emergence with the coming Christmas. However, as the Ministry of Agriculture assures, No eggs in stores is not a real threat, although any of their types (e.g. from a free runway) may be more hard to access.
