When almost 10 years ago WITU presented a strategy of DragonFly impact drones developed with WZL No. 2, there was no shortage of critical voices saying that specified a solution would not work on the battlefield. However, the war in Ukraine has shown how much specified constructions are effective. This year's MSPO saw the latest version of this system.
The past of DragonFly strategy is simply a good example of how Polish discipline and manufacture can effectively cooperate on projects of modern weapons systems. The concept of a tiny rotor that could hang over targets utilizing various types of warheads was born last decade in Military method Institute of Arms. This thought curious our armory adequate that its commercialization on the basis of obtaining a production and improvement licence was undertaken by Military Aviation Plant No. 2 from Bydgoszcz. They invited another company from this city to cooperate – Belma, whose engineers have taken up production for the drone of the battlehead pallet.
DragonFly weighs about 5 kg, in the air can spend a maximum of 20 minutes, moving at a maximum velocity of 120 km/h. The maximum flight scope is 10 km (this is the distance of the communication system) and the ceiling at which it can take place is 500 m. The drone can be armed with respective types of warheads – cumulative-shaft GK-1 HEAT; thermobaric GTB-1 FAE and shrapnel GO-1 HE. In addition, unmanned operators can train utilizing school heads – GO-1 HE-TP and GO-1 HE-TR.
Unfortunately, even though DragonFly attracted considerable interest from the Polish military, and the Minister of National Defence awarded it in 2016 for International Defence manufacture Salon the award for innovation, so far the Polish Armed Forces have not decided to acquisition this solution.
This year's MSPO saw the latest version of DragonFly with improved warheads (with more firepower). Representatives of WITU and WZL No. 2 hope that the conclusions and experience of the war in Ukraine in the usage of shock drones will break the deadlock around their construction.
