Dr. Bruno Surdel on TVP WORLD: "Great Journey" 1989 – forgotten cultural cleansing in Bulgaria

In the latest episode of the show How We Got Here on air TVP WORLD Dr. Bruno Surdel spoke about how the Todor Żivkov government carried out the alleged "Great Wandering" in 1989 (Bulgaria). The operation consisted of forcing mass “touristic” trips of Turkish citizens and another Muslims, who in practice became the largest cultural cleansing in Europe of the end of the Cold War (approximately 360,000 people).

The expert pointed out the historical sources of the Bulgarian-Turkish conflict, the ideology of the "national communism" of Żikow and the global inactivity towards events of the summertime of 1989. He pointed out that although the victims avoided mass slaughters known from later war in Yugoslavia, the trauma of resettlement and lost property remained alive to this day.
